Highly sensitive people (HSPs) often experience the world more deeply and intensely than others. This heightened sensitivity can affect how they process emotions, stimuli, and social interactions. But what actually causes someone to be highly sensitive? The answer lies in a complex mix of genetics, early relationships, cultural environments, and social systems. Understanding these factors helps us appreciate the challenges and strengths of highly sensitive individuals.

Genetic Roots of Temperament


Research shows that temperament, including sensitivity, has a strong genetic component. Studies on twins reveal that about 40-60% of temperament traits are inherited. For example, a study by Plomin and colleagues (2016) found that genetic factors influence how reactive a person’s nervous system is to stimuli. This means some people are born with a nervous system wired to respond more intensely to sensory input, emotions, and stress.

The relationship between a child and their primary caregiver shapes emotional regulation and stress responses. Psychotherapist Daniel J. Siegel and therapist Peter A. Wallin emphasize the importance of "goodness of fit" between a child’s temperament and caregiver’s style. When this fit is poor, children may develop insecure attachments, which can increase sensitivity to stress and emotional triggers.


Wallin explains that poor attachment can leave sensitive children feeling unsafe or misunderstood, which heightens their nervous system’s alertness. For example, a caregiver who is emotionally distant or inconsistent may unintentionally reinforce a child’s hypervigilance, making them more reactive to everyday stressors.


Epigenetics and Ancestral Trauma


Epigenetics studies how environmental factors influence gene expression without changing the DNA sequence. Research shows that trauma experienced by previous generations can leave epigenetic marks that affect descendants’ stress responses. Studies by Rachel Yehuda and colleagues demonstrate that children of trauma survivors may inherit heightened sensitivity to stress, making them more vulnerable to anxiety and emotional overwhelm.


This means that a highly sensitive person might carry biological traces of ancestral trauma, which can activate when they face their own stress or trauma. This inherited sensitivity adds another layer to understanding why some people react more strongly to life’s challenges.


Cultural Influences on Sensitivity


Cultural values shape how sensitivity is expressed and managed. Western cultures, especially white Western individualism, emphasize independence, self-reliance, and personal achievement. This focus places the individual at the center and often projects these values onto children, encouraging them to be assertive and self-sufficient.


For highly sensitive children, this cultural model can feel like a poor fit. They may struggle with the pressure to perform or mask their sensitivity to fit in. This mismatch can increase feelings of isolation or shame. In contrast, some non-Western cultures value community, emotional expression, and interdependence, which may better support sensitive individuals.


Systemic Stress and Nervous System Overload


Systemic factors such as oppression, systemic violence, and lack of resources create chronic stress environments. For people living under these conditions, the nervous system often stays in a state of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn as a survival strategy. This constant activation leaves little mental or emotional bandwidth for daily life and can intensify sensitivity.


For example, a person facing racial discrimination or poverty may experience heightened vigilance and anxiety, which compounds their natural sensitivity. This systemic stress can make it harder to regulate emotions and cope with sensory input, leading to exhaustion or burnout.


Sensory Challenges in Neurodivergence


Sensory processing issues are common in neurodivergent conditions like autism and ADHD. These challenges often mean that everyday sounds, lights, or textures can feel overwhelming. For highly sensitive people who are also neurodivergent, sensory overload takes up significant mental energy, increasing stress and reducing tolerance for additional demands.


This overlap explains why some highly sensitive individuals may also identify as autistic or have ADHD. Their nervous systems require more careful management to avoid overwhelm and maintain well-being.


Socialization and Exclusion


Social experiences shape how sensitivity develops over time. If someone is already sensory sensitive, culturally different, or neurodivergent, they may face exclusion or misunderstanding. This social rejection can be traumatic, increasing stress sensitivity and reducing resilience.


For example, a highly sensitive child who is bullied or ignored may develop heightened anxiety or depression. Social isolation reinforces the nervous system’s alertness, making it harder to tolerate everyday challenges. This cycle shows how social factors interact with biology to shape sensitivity.
